Philosophy and Therapeutic Approach

My training and background is in cognitive development and combines therapeutic approaches to strengthen individuals, families, and systems.

I provide therapy to those of all ages who need support in meeting their personal goals and figuring out how to lead more self-fulfilling lives.

Not only is my approach strength-based, but I use trauma-informed dialectic mindfulness, and I have expertise in providing individual therapy to children and adults of all ages, including adolescents and young adults. I provide direct support to young adults as they transition from childhood to adulthood, and therapy to adults particularly those with challenging family structures or history. I am certified as a provider of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. My clients and I work together to become of aware of areas of need, to identify both individual and relationship goals, and to collaboratively build skills necessary to achieving them.

To specifically address trauma, I have been trained to use both Internal Family Systems and psychiatric approaches to altering rigid thought processes and can support some of the most innovative psychiatric  interventions currently available (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Ketamine Assisted Therapy). I am certified as provider of psychedelic assisted therapy using Ketamine, as well as Psilocybin, and MDMA (as soon as these last two medications complete the full FDA approval process--see next section on Psychedelic Assisted Therapy for more information).

As a Family Therapist, I specialize in supporting parents of children, adolescents, and young adults with special needs. Because I have a thorough understanding of how children, adolescents, and adults learn and grow intellectually as well as emotionally, I understand children's and adults' strengths and weaknesses, as well as external challenges and supports critical to developing successful interventions, particularly for neurodiverse children. Parents and schools are critical factors in a child's life, and I work closely to help improve the systems within which key players operate, as well as to support building relationship skills with children and adolescents themselves. Improving tolerance, flexibility, as well as persistence, and simple courage to address challenges, is a basic underlying premise. I am a certified provider of Collaborative Proactive Solutions trained directly by Dr. Ross Greene to help children and their parents to better address their needs. I continue to participate in a monthly consult with Dr. Greene and other CPS practitioners.

I provide consultation and workshops to parents and teachers as well as work directly with children and their families. I help children, adolescents, and youth at all stages: both before and after assessment, from kindergarten through college for issues ranging from social emotional regulation, to educational, and behavioral difficulties. I specialize in helping neurodiverse young people with attentional and executive functioning disabilities with a specific focus on early to late adolescence. I help parents identify and understand some of the challenges unique to their child and to figure out ways to put into practice at home more optimal ways of interacting.

Testimonials

Dr. Payson Hays "helped me get along better with my parents... and how to make better decisions at school."

Jeremy C., age 16

“After working with Dr. Payson Hays, I understood more how to work with my daughter to problem solve so that we were all happier and she was more successful at home and at school."

Susan L.

“We reached out to Dr. Payson Hays (Sally) seeking support for our 5 year-old with behavioral challenges at home and school. Sally helped my husband and me to really understand the essence of the CPS model and to understand our 5 year-old in terms of his strengths, as well as areas in which he needs to develop skills or just developmentally does not have them yet. This framing helped us to understand him more empathically, and gave us a framework to facilitate conversations (and find solutions) with him in a caring and effective way. Sally was also instrumental in helping us navigate meeting with his school for his SST (student support team) meeting - she was a true advocate for our son and our family - and her knowledge as a school psychologist was invaluable. "

A.H.

“Dr. Payson Hays understands families with challenging kids, and her non-judgmental but practical approach was really helpful."

D.H.

"Because of... [Dr. Payson Hays'] help, I was able to pull myself together and graduate from high school.  I don't know if I'd be in college without her help."

Susana V.

Dr. Payson Hays has "extensive knowledge and immense professional and personal experience with ADD-ers. [She isn't] a passive therapist..[She]  implements coaching and teaching. I really appreciated how accessible and reliable she is. We maintained connection throughout the week with e-mails and the DBT diary. Truly everything she taught me was so valuable. I wouldn’t even know where to begin.  I highly recommend her. ."
