Psycho-educational Review of Records and Professional Advocacy

An important part of my private practice is dedicated to advocating for families in public and private schools to ensure children get the assessment and services to which they have a legal right. I prefer to start working with families from the beginning to help them at the preventive stages to help their children succeed. This may entail consultation regarding school processes (Student Study Teams, etc.), reading and interpretation of assessments completed by school districts, and possibly attendance/advocacy at school meetings. Most of the time, with my help, families are able to avoid costly litigation by making sure schools are fully informed and held accountable to address the needs of children with specific disabilities and diagnoses. However, when and if things get more complicated, I am able to work with a number of Bay Area lawyers to help families pursue other options should they become necessary. My intimate knowledge of Special Education in California and what it means for schools to meet the obligations of providing to special needs students a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) means that your family has an expert in your corner when you are making significant and lasting educational choices for your child.

Unfortunately at this time I do not have any space in my practice for advocacy alone.

Testimonials

“Dr. Payson Hays helped us in advocating for our son as we pushed for special education placement in a non-public school with district compensation.  She very patiently walked us through every step of the process and held our hands. She painstakingly went through all the details and put our case together in the most positive way. I forwarded Dr. Payson Hays's analysis to all of the people that were critical in our case. She helped everyone focus on the big picture and the end goal. If it hadn't been for her detailed analysis and advice, I don't think our attorney would have ever accepted our case. Dr. Payson Hays was invaluable. I would highly recommend Dr. Payson Hays as an advocate."

“I was feeling quite frustrated by what felt like a lack of understanding by my child's teachers regarding how his Asperger's impacted him academically and socially. Dr. Payson Hays helped me navigate the special education laws so that a 504 plan could be developed. She attended the school meeting with me and interfaced with the appropriate staff on my behalf. She was knowledgeable, caring, and professional throughout the entire process. She informed me of my options and was always supportive of my choices. I highly recommend her advocacy package to any parents of children with special needs."

“Dr. Payson Hays helped advocate for my son in getting diagnosed with ADD and getting Special Education services. She made the whole experience much less intimidating. She helped me understand how the process worked for my child. I wouldn't have been able to navigate it without her help."
